De dag voor Sinterklaas sprak ik de brave studenten kunstgeschiedenis aan de UGent toe tijdens het symposium Look/Alike. Onderwerp van de uiteenzetting: 'Pop & Art. Over de dubbelrol rockartiest en kunstenaar.'

Patti Smith gaf de voorzet: “I am not a rock ‘n’ roll singer who does art. I don’t consider myself essentially as a singer or a rock star. I consider myself primarily an artist. To me, rock ‘n’ roll is a way to convey my ideas or my political concerns or messages directly to the people. When you perform poetry, do work in a museum, or show drawings, it does not reach as many people. So when I feel I need to reach more people, rock ‘n’ roll is the perfect form for that.”

“Besides, I think that the Nato should be abolished.”

Een pijnlijke stilte viel, als een napalmbom in Vietnam. Toen volgden de gebeurtenissen elkaar bliksemsnel op. Een beeldschone studente op de eerste rij sprong op het podium, ontblootte haar borst, wikkelde zich in een Peace-flag en zong in mijn micro:

Henry Van de Veldes boekentoren bloosde instemmend in alle kleuren van de regenboog. De hele aula trok hand in hand richting Evere. Vooruit! Niets kon ons nog gebeuren.
